From Bandung to the Arches of Tokyo: Discover Indonesia at Hibiya Okuroji 2025 / Global Expansion & Cultural Exchange
In late 2025, the historic Hibiya Okuroji—a century-old brick architectural landmark nestled beneath the JR railway tracks in Tokyo—became the stage for a new kind of material revolution. MYCL was honored to participate in the “Discover Indonesia” pop-up store, an exclusive showcase curated by the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI Tokyo) and Nusantara Japan.
This event was more than a retail pop-up; it was the official introduction of MYCL’s “Earth and Ocean” portfolio to a Japanese audience that defines the global standard for craftsmanship and sustainability.
A Landmark Partnership: JR East x KINOLI®
The highlight of our participation was the announcement of our strategic partnership with JR East (East Japan Railway Company). Demonstrating the commercial readiness of our mycelium technology, JR East has adopted KINOLI®—our 100% mycelium leather produced in Nagano—for the official ID card tags at the Takanawa Gateway City office.
Takanawa Gateway City is envisioned as a “Global Gateway” and a prototype for a zero-carbon society. By integrating KINOLI® into the daily lives of their team, JR East is signaling a shift toward regenerative corporate infrastructure—choosing materials that are grown, not manufactured from petroleum.
Earth and Sea: Mylea™ and Mylea™ Sea
At the Hibiya Okuroji arches, MYCL presented a vision where biology meets luxury. Visitors experienced our dual-material innovation:
Mylea™ (Earth): Our signature mycelium leather, celebrated for its durability and tactile, organic finish.
Mylea™ Sea (Ocean): Making its Tokyo debut, our algae-based bio-polymer offered a plastic-free, translucent aesthetic that resonated deeply with the Japanese concept of monozukuri (the art of making things).
The “Mycelium Road” Connecting Bandung and Nagano
Our presence in Japan is powered by MYCL Japan and our dedicated facility in Nagano Prefecture, Japan’s premier mushroom-growing region. By collaborating with local farmers and using indigenous resources, we are building a decentralized production model that shortens supply chains and empowers local communities.
This “Mycelium Road” connects the biotechnology of Bandung with the refined craftsmanship of Japan, creating a material that is truly global in vision but local in execution.
Designing with Bunka Fashion College
To ensure our materials lead the next wave of Japanese fashion, MYCL also highlighted our ongoing research collaboration with Bunka Fashion College. By placing Mylea™ and Mylea™ Sea in the hands of Japan’s future design leaders, we are ensuring that the next generation of “Made in Japan” products is as sustainable as it is beautiful.
